Taking its title from the posthumous art work by Marcel Duchamp, Étant Donnés is State of Mind’s most experimental work to date.
The work is based on lengthy studio improvisations, heavily edited and molded into new shapes – sometimes turning into abstract soundscapes – sometimes resembling traditional pop songs.
Stylistically all over the map, Étant Donnés travels through minimalism, glitch, synthpop, musique concréte, dub and other genres. Chance occurrences abound, thus paying hommage to Duchamp, the pioneer of the “readymade”.
“Louche” is a term used to describe the opacity created when ice water is slowly poured into a glass of absinthe – also enhancing the aroma of the mythical beverage.
“The Louche” is the new single from Copenhagen-based singer-songwriter-electro-noisepop project State of Mind – and the first precursor of the upcoming album “Diagnosis”.
Over a throbbing electronic groove (recalling the darker sides of Depeche Mode), frontman Kim Bülow Bonfils sings an ode to the dangerous pleasures of absinthe – fittingly surrounded by swirling psychedelic soundscapes.
“It’s not okay to feel the way I feel”.
The second single from State of Mind’s upcoming album “Diagnosis” is a relentless litany of self-deprecation.
But a surprisingly upbeat synthpop groove carries the track along to the (il)logical conclusion that “it’s not okay to think it’s not okay”.
State of Mind’s latest single explores the darkest corners of suicidal thought and poses the question: If the song’s protagonist can no longer appreciate the pleasures of life – why is it she still goes looking for “The Perfect Place” of beauty and tranquility to end it all?
A brooding ambient soundscape provides the backdrop for this sad tale. But the track picks up pace in the surprise instrumental outro.
“The Perfect Place” is the third single from State of Mind’s upcoming album “Diagnosis”.
Over a busy, Steve Reich-like piano figure, the narrator muses “I’m just the way I am/And I can’t take it any more”. The song turns into a 12-bar synthpop blues in a minor key – backed by an uptempo beat and interspersed with acid house-style synth solos. “A change is bound to come,” it concludes. “And I will fight it all the way.”
“A Change Is Bound to Come” is the fourth single taken from State of Mind’s upcoming album “Diagnosis”, and will be out for streaming and download August 3, 2015.
